The recycling rate for BSA (construction and demolition waste) is relatively high (over 75%). This generated $126.89 billion in 2019. Europe provided the largest share, nearly two-fifths of the total global market - and is expected to reach $149.19 billion by 2027. Unfortunately, many of the most valuable materials in BSA cannot be meaningfully separated and end up in waste dumps. This helps to get an idea of the efficiency potential for climate neutrality that exists in construction.
Reincarnate aims to promote the circular economy in the European construction sector and enable:
- Maximize the life cycle of buildings, building products and materials
- Reduce construction and demolition waste by 80%
- Encourage the reusability of buildings, construction products and materials and, as a result, reduce industry emissions by 70%
Circular approach from the RE Suite
To that end, our RE Suite software is being enhanced with an Internet of Things platform that will allow it to function as a Circular Potential Information Management (CP-IM) platform for Reincarnate. This will make it possible to monitor and manage demonstration cases in the RE Suite. With this, our software will eventually make it possible to also approach property management from a circular point of view in daily practice and, for example, combine it with MJOBs and lifetime cost analyses.
Reincarnate will generate ten technical innovations using CP-IM data. From solutions for building inspection, construction and decommissioning planning to identification and classification of CDW. These will use digital technologies, such as a digital twin representation, artificial intelligence and robot automation.
Demonstration cases
All innovations will be demonstrated at 11 selected pilot projects in Europe and China. Furthermore, business process guidelines and an e-learning platform will be developed to disseminate Reincarnate's results and make them available to the market.
The Reincarnate consortium consists of 16 multidisciplinary organizations - including medium and small businesses, large industries, non-profit organizations, RTOs (Research and Technology Organizations) and higher education institutions - from eight countries. This diverse team will work together for 48 months, bringing expertise in digital twins, life-cycle prediction, materials assessment, social sciences, construction management, architecture and property management.
Launched in June 2022, Reincarnate is funded by the European Commission under the
Horizon Europe research and innovation program.
