Linking resident information to a BIM model
Deep renovation of buildings is key to meet the EU's energy efficiency target and housing associations are working hard to reach this target and make the existing housing stock more energy efficient. To propose and develop optimized renovation solutions, a good understanding of the as-is situation of a building is required. A full picture of energy-efficient buildings not only concerns the use of energy but also the comfort of users, their preferences, and their priorities.
As part of the BIM Speed project, DEMO has developed a Crowdsourcing application with which residents can be invited to answer questions online about themes such as lighting, acoustic, and indoor air quality. The main objective of developing this app is to optimize and digitize the process of data collection and data analysis from the inhabitants. Moreover, a simple BIM model has been integrated into the application to facilitate spatial communication and interaction with the inhabitants as well as the storage of responses in relation to each spatial component in question.
This provides several advantages:
- No inspector is needed to collect resident information
- It contributes to the involvement and participation of residents in the process
- The entire process is automated so it saves time and cost
The special feature of the Crowdsourcing tool is that this information can be linked to a BIM model so that factual information and experience can be related to each other and easily visualized in attractive and understandable ways.
How does the Crowdsourcing tool work
The tool consists of two parts.
Questionnaire management
The tool consists of a desktop application for managing the questionnaires. Here are among other things
- Questionnaires are formulated
- Questionnaires are linked to a BIM model
- User accounts are created
- Login details are distributed
- Results are processed
Inhabitants App
In addition, the Inhabitants app is available for mobile use on a tablet or smartphone by residents. They can use this app to:
- Log in with the credentials provided to them
- Agree to the privacy policy
- Set the language preference
- Answer and save questionnaires
Stek pilot project
The Crowdsourcing tool has been developed within the European BIM-Speed project that is coordinated by Technische Universität Berlin and DEMO Consultants. The tool is being tested together with other methodologies in a pilot project at Stek Wonen. Read the interview with Ivo Schalkwijk van Stek.
